about Computer Aided Dispatch in the Encyclopedia of Law Enforcement:

Computer aided dispatch (CAD) is a computer management system designed to aid law enforcement by allowing instant communication between the police dispatcher and field officers. With CAD, the dispatcher is better able to provide the officer valuable information necessary to enhance officer safety, increase response time, and improve service to the community. Depending upon the CAD system (there are many variations available), the emergency operator receives a call from a citizen (usually via the emergency telephone number system, such as 9-1-1). As the information is provided and coded into the computer, the operator forwards the data to the police dispatcher. The data immediately flash on the dis-patcher's computer screen. The CAD system will give the dispatcher the caller's location and telephone number (caller ID).
